Explanation
- You can search for words in the chant incipit or you can search for
a chant identification number.
- If you enter text both in the incipit text box and in the chant identification number box,
the chant identification number box will be ignored.
- You can search for chants associated with a liturgical occasion as defined in the
Table of Liturgical Occasions (Feasts) under the header Search Liturgical Occasion.
- Incipit:
- If you search for "First few words" (the default), the search will return chants whose
incipits begin with the words you type in the text box. For example, if you type Ave Maria
in the text box, all chants that begin with those words will be returned.
If you type in hi you will see chants like Hi empti sunt ex hominibus
and Hic est beatissimus. If you just want the hi's and not the hic's,
type a space after the hi in the search box.
- If you search for "Keywords," the search will return chants whose
incipits contain any of the words you type in the text box. For example, if you type
Ave Maria, the search will return Ave Maria gratia plena,
Ave domina mundi Maria, Maria et flumina, Ave sponsa and so on.
- You can restrict the search to return only chants of a certain genre.
By default, no restriction is applied. If you want a restriction, choose one
from the pull-down box.
- Chant Identification Number
- If you search by chant identification number, those chants which
match the seven- or eight-digit code you enter into the box will be
returned. Please note that the "chant identification numbers" of
chants in the Corpus Antiphonalium Officii start with the letters
"cao" (without the quotation marks) and are followed by the four
numbers (plus applicable suffix) as provided in CAO. For those
chants not in CAO, please refer to the page
About the
Sources Indexed by Cantus for the unique three-character
manuscript codes assigned by Cantus to each source.
- Liturgical Occasion
- Owing to the large number of liturgical occasions (feasts), you must begin by choosing the first letter of the name of the desired occasion. This will display a list. You can then click on the name of a specific feast to view all the chants associated with it.
